it is no wonder that President Hu Jintao would not want to risk such an embarrassment.

Posted by Aaron - 21/11/05 at 04:11:00 amElis Regina & Tom Jobim are Brazilian jazz artists who recorded an album together called Elis & Tom. It is completely in Portuguese which I do not understand a word of except for the few times I think I hear Spanish. I don’t understand Spanish much anymore, but it is familiar. When I listen to it, I feel superior to those who just listen to music in English. A similar feeling I am sure those who listen to classical music or jazz music get. “Look, I can listen to music without words. I am more sophisticated.”
I used to try to impress people with my music. I would find the most obscure item in my collection and strategically play it when I knew I’d have visitors or there would be heavy hall traffic. I would play it in hopes that girl I liked would mysteriously pop into my dorm and comment on my music. “Hey, I kind of like this. What is this?” “Oh, it is Elis & Tom, a Brazilian duet. You’ve probably never heard of them.”
I jump onto amazon.com when she leaves the room and promptly order the CD. The shipping time allows for a thoughtful delay and then POW! I surprise her with the CD. Or I could save it for an upcoming birthday or gift-giving holiday. It would alleviate the awkwardness of gift giving. No longer would I have to ask if she liked it, because she already told me she did. Perfect!
It never happened. So I stopped trying to impress people with music. Now I just offer my tastes as a fait accompli: I have better tastes in music than you. (by the way, if you didn’t know what fait accompli meant, I’m better than you because I did and because I can use arcane Latin.)
